Estudió Derecho en la Universidad de Edimburgo, volviendo a Zimbawe como profesor de Derecho en la Universidad de Bostwana. De regreso a Edimburgo, fue profesor de Derecho Médico en la universidad de esta ciudad y profesor emérito en la Facultad de Derecho de la misma. Ha sido presidente del Comité de Ética del British Medical Journal, vicepresidente de la comisión de Genética Humana y miembro de la Comisión Internacional de Bioética de la UNESCO. Ha recibido numerosos galardone a su actividad profesional, siendo miembro de la Asociación Nacional de Ciencias y Letras de Escocia y Comandante de la Orden del Imperio Británico. Gran aficionado a la música, toca el fagot y ha fundado una orquesta.

Además de su producción académica, es autor de numerosos libros para niños y novelas policíacas de carácter desenfadado.
