Brunner proyectó una serie de futuros que, si bien no son nuestro presente, no se alejan demasiado de lo que podría llegar a ser nuestro futuro más inmediato. Quizá sea, junto con Ballard, uno de los autores cuya ficción ha sonado con más fuerza en mi cabeza durante los últimos años. En El jinete de la onda del shock, Brunner critica, no sólo a la sociedad capitalista -me pregunto cómo habrían definido al autor americano hoy, ¿anarquista radical antisistema? Casi peor que en los 70- sino a la propia naturaleza humana, atraída por un sistema que da rienda suelta a lo peor de nosotros.
