Sinópsis del libro:

  • Madness reigns in the United States of America. Not of the clinically-diagnosed, mental illness sort (insanity, dementia or lunacy) but cultural. What reigns in the U.S. is a madness of outrageously moral, ethical and existential contradictions, ironies, paradoxes, twisted logic and oxymoronic language. Moreover, it is historical: dating back from when the likes of Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and George Washington owned slaves while decreeing us the land of the free, to the present when, despite having elected a Black American President in 2008, oppression, marginalization and discrimination against racial minorities, women, and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBTQ) community are prominent.

My decision to write about our national madness came on the heels of the publication in 2005 of The Pharisees Amongst Us, the book I wrote that notes how, in their campaign against the LGBTQ community, Christian evangelicals present themselves as modern-day Pharisees. I was very satisfied with what I wrote in that book, but even as I was writing it, I was aware of the larger narrative, the madness that reigns in our nation, into which it fits. Nevertheless, I was convinced after writing The Pharisees that my book writing days were over. I had spent three years writing that book, and could not see myself dedicating that much time to a writing project ever again. After a couple of months, however, the call to write about the larger context of The Pharisees began and would not stop ringing in my head.

Despite that incessant ringing, I tarried, primarily because I had identified religion, race, and politics - the three topics I had been told from childhood were too controversial to discuss with virtually anyone. It was not that I was afraid to swim into deeply controversial waters, but that I had reservations about overcoming some of the obvious challenges of taking on such a broad topic.
